Rational DOORs License Error

Hello.

I am having a problem regarding Licensing.  I have only one license so only one user can use Rational DOORs at a time.  I logged in on a laptop connected on LAN (Workgroup) but after that when i try to log on Windows Server 2003 it says that maximum number of Licenses reached and when I check the status on LM TOOLs it says that the license use by "etc user".  I tried to stop and start Flex Lm but still same problem.  I tried to uninstall installation manager but still no result.  Again I try with installation manager, but still same problem.  Can any one tell me what should i do?

Also i am having problem installing installation manager.  I can install license key server administrator but installation manager could not install on server.

Can any one help me out?

Thanks

Umair

Perhaps the two machines are pointing to different license managers.  Check the "TELELOGIC_LICENSE_FILE" environment variable.

  • Right Click "My Computer", Properties >>Advanced Tab [Environment Variables].  Search for that variable in the two lists and get its value.

When you stop and restart the FlexLM service it will purge the current log file and start a new log. It would be useful if you could attach a copy of the log file just after the FlexLM service has been stopped and restarted as the log can provide a lot of useful information about the status of license daemons and the source of a checked out licenses. LM Tools will have a tab or menu item that will show where the text log file is located.

Hello llandale

Actually the problem i have checked today is that we are using two LM Tools at two different servers also i have checked environment variables, both servers have different variables.. The laptop i am talking about is using DOORs client.  So when i perform status inquiry on "etcserver" it shows that it is using the same license file of "CMServer'.  so i think this is the problem I am facing.  Guide me further please.  Logs attached and status inquiry of LMtools is also attached.

Thanks

From my observations of the log files that you have provided, only the FlexLM service on server "CMserver" is managing DOORS licenses via the "ibmratl.exe" daemon process.

The "CMserver" and "Status Inquiry" log files shows that immediatly after the restart of the FlexLM service, one DOORS license is checked out for user "ibrahim" who is using a pc\laptop that has a computer name = "DELL". So you need to contact user "ibrahim" and ask that user to close down the DOORS client to free up the one license.

Even though the FlexLM service on server "etcserver" might be using the same license.dat file as server "CMserver", it does not seem to have the necessary daemon process files to manage DOORS licenses (The license.dat file will define which daemon process is needed to manage DOORS licenses).

Don't know much about Flex; but I wonder if a license ..err.. the license has been "borrowed".

Yes - this could indeed be a borrowed license but that would be a very deliberate action by a user.

I am not up to date with the latest version of LMTOOLS, but there should be be a tab or a menu item named "Borrowing" and this should have a button or an option that will provide a report on all borrowed licenses.

When using LMTOOLS in an environment where there are multiple instances of FLEXLM, LMTOOLS can connect to any one of these instances. Make sure that you know which FLEXLM service it is connected to - there should be a tab or menu item that will display the FLEXLM services that LMTOOLS can connect with. Based on the information provided, it is my opinion that the FLEXLM instance on server "CMserver" is the one that is managing DOORS licenses.

Hello!

The license is not borrowed i have checked that already. If borrowed i set 31 July its expiration date.   Second thing is that isnt it possible that there is a conflict between two license files?  Like when i perform status inquiry on "etcserver" its path shows that it is using  the license file on CMServer.  If it is so how could i solve it.  I remember this problem have been occured in the past but then i just uninstall installation manager from CMServer and everything was ok.  But now i have tried this also even i have removed DOORs from that client PC even from registry but still no result.  Another thing is that i once logged in as my admin account on "ibrahim" Dell PC.  Does it have any effect on that?  I think it should not have any effect because i just create a user using that PC and nothing else. Does anyone knows where the server maintains its log entries like these?

Thanks

I don't think there is a conflict between the two license files.

When I read the log files that you sent for "etcserver" and "CMserver", both of these log files identify the path of the license file that the FLEXLM instance on those servers are using. For example, I have copied the lines from each log file that identifies the path.

etcserver - 8:28:51 (lmgrd) License file(s): C:\Program Files\TeleLogic\license.dat

CMserver - 9:50:14 (lmgrd) License file(s): D:\IBM\License_Key\license.dat

So each FLEXLM service has it's own license.dat file. The license.dat files on both servers cannot be identical because these license.dat files include an encrypted key that will only work on one specific server. If you're able to provide a copy of each license.dat file that might help to provide some clues.

As I stated in my previous post, LMTOOLS can connect with multiple instances of FLEXLM. If you are using LMTOOLS on "etcserver", you need to check if it is connected to "etcserver" or "CMserver". It sounds like it was connected to "CMserver" and you received a status report for "CMserver". Thats OK, because I believe that only "CMserver" can manage DOORS licneses, because according the log file for "etcserver" it indicates that it does not have access to the correct daemon processes for DOORS, or the license.dat file that "etcserver" uses does not include any DOORS licenses.

Unfortunately, this can get very complicated and because I cannot see and interrogate your setup, this is very hard to resolve in this forum. Do you have any IT people who know something about FLEXLM? Someone has installed these two FLEXLM instances and must have had some idea as to what they were doing because the log files you provided indicate that your company is using FLEXLM to serve licenses for many tools.

Hello PRM

Thanks for your nice guidance and help to solve it.  Actually when i perform status inquiry on "etcserver' it shows that it is using the license file of CMserver although its path contains C:\Program Files\TeleLogic\license.dat.

I have solved the issue now.  But i want to share it with you also.  I wasnt sure that the either flexlm makes entries on server or not. Actually when I uninstall installation manger through Add/Remove programs , although it removes it but as server maintains entries in its files so i need to remove all entries from registry.  For this i use Xp manager for Xp on server to remove it completely (same procedure on Ibrahim pc for my satisfaction). after that i restarted the server and then install installation manger again.  Now license if released and everything is working.
